Help CHA go Solar!

SOLAR FOR THE SHELTER
By Mary Stenberg, CHA Board Member

Chequamegon Humane Association Board Members took action at their February board meeting to accept a bid from Jolma Electric to install a solar power system at the Animal Shelter.  Work on this project began last fall when Board Members met with Bill Bailey of Cheq Bay Renewables.  Mr. Bailey completed a cash flow assessment for CHA by analyzing the cost and amount of electricity usage at the Shelter facility for the previous year.  Mr. Bailey is very knowledgeable about solar power and his expertise has been most helpful to CHA.  “New incentives for renewable energy in the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act have changed the playing field for municipalities and nonprofits like CHA.  CHA can now use Direct Pay to lower project costs 40%, reducing payback times and making a project economically feasible that would not be otherwise,” says Bailey.

CHA received notice this past November that their application for a grant from “Solar for Good” had been approved.  This grant will cover one-half the cost of the solar panels needed for the project. The panels are state-of-the-art, bi-facial panels with glass on both sides, which allows the solar cells to collect light that bounces off the ground (or snow in winter!), boosting their energy collection.

As a non-profit organization, CHA will apply for all available grants, incentives and rebates.  Based on the estimates for the 15.2 kilowatt system, the total cost of the project would be $35,116.  Donations needed from the community are estimated to be $16,659.  Once installed, annual cost savings to CHA the first year would be $2735 which would result in substantial savings in utility costs for the Shelter.  According to Executive Director, Kari Olinger, “This savings would result in more money for animal rescues and surrenders and for the health and wellness services for needed for all the Shelter animals waiting for their forever homes.”

To complete the Solar Project at the CHA Animal Shelter, donations from the community will soon be accepted. One way to donate is to purchase one or more solar panels. Each panel costs $350, and all panel donors (those donating $350 or more) will be recognized.  The goal is to have solar power installed by the end of August 2023.

Should you wish to donate to the Chequamegon Humane Association’s Solar Power Project, go on-line to the CHA website (www.chaadopt.org) and click on the Ways to Give or Donate button at the top of the page.  Then click on Solar Power Project.  You may also send a check to the Chequamegon Humane Association, PO Box 93, Ashland, WI  54806.  Be sure to write “Solar Project” on your check’s memo line.  Any donation amount will be very much appreciated. Visit the Chequamegon Humane Association’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CHAadopt/ for more about this exciting and innovative project!

LEAVE A LEGACY

BEQUESTS

A bequest is a gift of money, stocks, bonds, jewelry, or other personal property that's given through a will., trust or beneficiary designation form. A bequest is one of the most generous ways to make a significant contribution to the Chequamegon Humane Association and its mission. Bequests come in many forms.
Specific Bequests – Names a specific sum of money or a specific asset to be gifted.
  • Contingency Bequests – Provide for the gift only after a certain event has occurred, for example, CHA might be designated to receive a certain bequest if the bequeather's spouse is no longer alive
  • Residual Bequests - Leave to the recipient everything that remains in an estate after other bequests have been made and various expenses and claims have been paid.
To leave a bequest to CHA please talk to your estate planner.

BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION GIFTS

When preparing a will, life insurance policy, or retirement account, you designate an individual or organization, known as the beneficiary, to receive the benefits or proceeds when you pass away. Did you know you can designate CHA as a direct beneficiary of other assets? Among these are qualified retirement plans, IRAs, life insurance policies, and revocable and irrevocable trusts. You could also name CHA as a direct beneficiary of your taxable investment accounts or bank accounts through a “transfer on death” (TOD) assignment.
To name CHA as one of your primary or contingent beneficiaries in your life insurance policy or retirement or investment account, please consult your financial professional where your accounts are held.

Animal Assisted Therapy

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is the use of animal interactions with patients to aid recovery from health problems or to help people cope with certain medical conditions. Those medical providers and therapists who support AAT believe it has many benefits such as helping with personal and social development, increased self-esteem, improved mental health, better social skills, and increased empathy and nurturing skills.
Some forms of AAT involve caring for animals, such as feeding, grooming, and bathing the animals, on a regular basis. Other forms of AAT include an animal being brought to a care facility for patient interaction. For example, ATD’s volunteers bring their therapy dogs to rehabilitation centers, hospice facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities to visit and interact with those in need of comfort.

Become a Volunteer

Fundraising
It takes a lot of work getting things ready for our fundraisers throughout the year. We need people who are willing to help pull these events off.   We need people to help us soliciting donations,  helping with set-up of events, selling tickets and even organizing events. We are always open to new ideas that will help us raise funds for the shelter.
Grant Writer
We are in need of people to scout out for possible grants, helping fill out applications and proof-read them as well. This position would be great for someone looking to get experience in the field, or college internship.
Dog & Cat Buddies
Training for Dog & Cat Buddies is held by appointment at this time. Call Jayme to set that up a time to attend a volunteer orientation.  Children (16 & under) MUST be accompanied by an adult.  There is no registration or fee to become a volunteer. We do prefer volunteers sign up days and times but not required.

Laundry Room Attendant
On a daily basis we go through many load of laundry and clean many many dishes! A laundry room attendant switches laundry and washes dishes so that our animals have nice clean bedding and sanitized dishes to eat from. Help is needed between the hours of 8am and 7pm every day!

Weekend Dog walkers 730AM and 530PM
We are always short handed on weekends, volunteering at these two key times on the weekend can free up staff to concentrate on other animal duties. If your interested in being part of our dog walking and cleaning crew let Jayme at the shelter know! This position is a scheduled volunteer opportunity.
Volunteer Groups and Organizations
We love groups to help too, but please contact us first so we can plan your activity to keep everyone busy and make it a success!  For other information please contact Jayme Morey at the shelter: (715) 682-9744 or by e-mail to:  cheqhumane@yahoo.com
Whether you've volunteered before or are new, please fill out the volunteer application with insurance waiver on the back .

FOSTER

It takes a very special person to open their heart and home to an animal temporarily. If you think you are that special hero, then fostering might be for you. Fostering an animal can be a rewarding experience.

At CHA, most of our fosters are animals who are not quite ready to go to their permanent homes just yet like pregnant dogs or cats, kittens and puppies who are still to young to be spayed or neutered.

Growing up in a loving home environment, being socialized with people is better for the animals than growing up in a shelter. For families with children, it is a wonderful opportunity for children to be exposed to animals and interact with them. With Spring coming with full force, we will soon be in need of foster homes for pregnant moms, kittens and even dogs and puppies! You provide the safe loving environment we provide all the medical, food and supplies needed to care for them.

If you're interested in becoming a foster, please fill out an application now.
