Welcome to the Chequamegon Humane Association!

We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving the pets and people of Ashland County and Bayfield County. The Chequamegon Humane Association was created in 1985 by a small group of volunteers with the goal of rescuing homeless dogs and cats and finding them caring homes.  In the beginning they fostered these animals in their own homes and were only able to offer basic medical care.  In 1994 support for our organization had grown and a shelter was built completely with donated materials by our volunteers.  Over the next several years, the CHA budget grew and the organization hired part-time staff at minimum wage. The CHA Board of Directors hired the current full-time shelter director in 2006. We now provide a full range of services to all of our adoptable animals before they are placed in permanent homes, including age-appropriate vaccinations, sterilization, parasite treatment, and medical care for all illnesses or injuries.

The mission of the Chequamegon Humane Association is to promote and support the humane treatment of animals in the Chequamegon Bay area. In recent years CHA has been able to provide an increasing level of care for all the homeless pets in our care as well as the more recent addition of a low-cost spay/neuter program for the public. Our staff and board of directors continue to put on events in our community that bring humane treatment of animals to the foreground.
